Richmond is a major independent city that is both the capital of Virginia and the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. Located at the James River’s fall line, it is around 98 miles from Washington, D.C. Richmond is the fourth most populous city in the state. The city is ideally located for the development of trade and commerce. It has the world’s only triple rail line crossing. Other specialties include the Great Turning Basin (waterway) and the intersection of two main interstates.
In 2007, MarketWatch named Greater Richmond as the 3rd best city for business. There are half a dozen Fortune 500 companies in the city, including Dominion Resources, Genworth Financial, Markel Corporation, Owens & Minor, WestRock Company, CarMax, Altria Group, and McKesson Medical-Surgical.
